Time management is the method in which one plans and controls how much time to spend on tasks. Effective time management enables you to complete more in a shorter period with lower stress.

Set goals

Start with setting goals for the day/week that are attainable and measurable. Be sure that the goals you set are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.

Prioritize

Look at your daily tasks and determine which are:

  • Important and urgent: Complete these tasks as soon as you’re able.
  • Important but not crucial: Schedule these tasks out on your calendar.
  • Urgent but not important: If possible, delegate these tasks. If not, move them to the “Important and urgent” level.

Schedule out each task

Scheduling out your tasks on a calendar helps you be more focused and efficient. I find it helpful to see what my week looks like from a meeting and task perspective. When you view your week/month at this level it helps you recognize potential problems before they arise. Then if there are any issues, you’re able to plan ahead.

Take a breaks

When you move from one task to the next it may become hard to stay focused. Allow yourself the time to take a break and clear your head. Consider moving onto other tasks that may not take as much concentration, go for a walk, meditate, or workout.

Stay organized

  • Utilize your calendar to document deadlines for projects/tasks
  • Consider which days might be best to dedicate to specific tasks and document them on your calendar
  • “Declutter” your workspace. For example, when working on a monthly report, only have the tabs open needed to complete this task and close all others
  • Keep your inbox clean and organized

Stay Focused

Removing “clutter” from your workspace frees your mind to stay focused on the task at hand. Clutter can be anything from excess tabs in your browser, to paperwork piling up on your desk. Also, consider turning off work chat if you’re working on something that needs concentration.

Plan ahead

Starting the day with an idea of what needs to be done that day is very helpful. At the end of each day, make a habit of writing out your “to-do” list for the following workday. By doing this you’re setting up your day for success.

Utilize these tips to help make your days more productive and efficient.
